Vitz (Japanese hatchback) vs Yaris (sedan/compact): engine sizes, parts availability, fuel use, resale value and current prices in Addis Ababa.

Same platform, different badges

The Vitz is the Japanese-market hatchback; the Yaris is the export name for the same platform and also covers the Yaris sedan (sold in Ethiopia as "Yaris sedan" or "Belta"). In Addis, "Vitz" usually means the 1.0L/1.3L hatchback imported from Japan or Dubai; "Yaris" often means the sedan or the European-spec hatchback.

Engine and fuel

1.0L 3-cylinder (1KR-FE) Vitz models are the cheapest to run and tax but struggle on Entoto-style climbs with passengers. 1.3L (2NZ/1NZ) is the sweet spot. Yaris sedans are mostly 1.3L and 1.5L. Expect 15–18 km/L in city driving for the 1.0L and 12–15 km/L for the 1.3L.

Parts, mechanics and resale

Both share parts with the Platz, Belta and Ractis, so Merkato and Megenagna spare-parts shops stock everything. Resale is strongest for the compact hatchback — a clean 2008–2012 Vitz with Code 2 plates sells within days. Sedans appeal to families and ride-hailing drivers.

Verdict

City-only, tight budget, easy parking: Vitz 1.3L. Family or ride-hailing, boot space matters: Yaris sedan. Either way, follow the used-car checklist before paying.
