How to Buy a Used Car in Ethiopia (2026 Checklist)

Step-by-step checklist for buying a used car in Addis Ababa: ሊብሬ (libre) and plate codes, chassis/engine checks, mechanic inspection, price negotiation and transfer at the Transport Authority.

1. Decide what you actually need

In Addis Ababa the market is dominated by compact Toyotas (Yaris, Vitz, Platz), Suzuki Dzire and Hyundai sedans because parts are cheap and every mechanic knows them. A 1.0–1.3L engine is enough for city use and taxes far less than a 2.0L+. If you plan to drive to the regions, prioritise ground clearance (RAV4, Hilux, Land Cruiser) over comfort.

2. Understand the plate code

Ethiopian plates carry a code (ኮድ) that tells you the vehicle's registered use: Code 2 is private, Code 1 is commercial/taxi, Code 3 is organisation-owned, and Code 4 is government. A private buyer should look for Code 2. Changing a Code 1 car to Code 2 is possible but costs time and money — factor that into the price.

3. Check the ሊብሬ (Libre) carefully

  • The name on the libre must match the seller's ID. If it doesn't, you are buying from a middle-man — ask for the real owner.
  • Compare the chassis number (ሻንሲ ቁጥር) and engine number (ሞተር ቁጥር) on the libre with the stamped numbers on the car.
  • Confirm the car is not under a bank loan (ባንክ እዳ) — ask for the bank release letter if it ever was.
  • Check the annual inspection (ቦሎ) and road-fund stickers are current; unpaid years are added to your bill.

4. Inspect the car (or pay a mechanic to)

Addis roads destroy suspensions. Have a mechanic check shock absorbers, bushings, CV joints and the gearbox — especially on automatic Vitz/Yaris, where a tired CVT is the most expensive fault. Look for repainted panels (a sign of accident repair), mismatched tyre wear and oil leaks. A pre-purchase inspection at a garage costs a fraction of one repair.

5. Compare the price with real listings

Sellers anchor high. Before negotiating, open the Shekela price guide for the exact model and year and compare the asking price with the typical price from current listings. Imported ("Europe standard", "Dubai") cars command a premium over locally used ones; mileage and plate code move the price more than colour or extras.

6. Close the deal at the Transport Authority

Never pay the full amount before the ownership transfer. Meet at the Addis Ababa Transport Authority branch, sign the sale contract (ውል), pay the transfer fee, and only release the balance once the libre is issued in your name. Pay by bank transfer so there is a record.
