Why Are Car Prices in Ethiopia So High? Taxes, Imports and the 2026 Market
How import duty, excise, VAT and the exchange rate stack up on a used car in Ethiopia, why electric vehicles are cheaper, and what it means for buyers and sellers in 2026.
The tax stack
A used petrol car entering Ethiopia pays customs duty, excise tax (which rises steeply with engine size and age), VAT, surtax and withholding — together often 200–300% of the car's value. That is why a ten-year-old Vitz costs more in Addis than a new one in Dubai, and why engine size matters so much to the price.
The exchange rate
Since the 2024 foreign-exchange reform the birr has floated, and car prices track the dollar almost immediately. Sellers re-price weekly; this is why Shekela's price guides show a 30-day trend rather than a fixed "book value".
Electric vehicles are the exception
EVs are exempt from excise and VAT on import, so a new BYD Seagull, Dolphin or Song Plus can cost less than a ten-year-old petrol Corolla. Charging infrastructure in Addis is growing fast; outside the city it is still limited. See current BYD listings and the Seagull price guide.
What this means for buyers
- Smaller engines hold value better.
- A car with complete papers and Code 2 plates sells at a premium — paperwork is part of the asset.
- Compare against the live median before you negotiate; the "right" price last month is wrong this month.
